About Foundation Jewellers
In the 1990s, a turning point came when a client brought in an antique Peranakan piece for restoration. That jewel—crafted by the master of Foundation Jewellers’ first grandmaster artisan—opened Mr. Thomis Kwan’s eyes to the rare artistry and cultural depth of Peranakan jewellery.
At a time when much of the market was drawn to sleek, modern Hong Kong–style designs, Thomis recognized a great potential —the revival of this fading art form. From that moment, Foundation Jewellers became a home where Peranakan heritage could flourish once more. Each creation honoring timeless motifs while embracing thoughtful, contemporary design pieces to be worn, cherished, and passed down through generations.
In 2015, it was revealed that Queen Elizabeth II had worn the Bird of Paradise Brooch on multiple occasions, including the christening of Princess Charlotte. This royal endorsement further elevated the brand’s prestige and sparked greater interest in Foundation Jewellers’ distinctive Peranakan designs.
Foundation Jewellers was invited to set up a pop-up booth at Design Orchard (now known as DORS), showcasing its signature Peranakan-inspired creations to a vibrant mix of local shoppers and global visitors. The showcase offered a fresh perspective on heritage jewellery—merging traditional craftsmanship with modern design—while reinforcing the brand’s reputation for its intricate and excellent craftsmanship.
Riding on this momentum, Foundation Jewellers began co-hosting curated events and collaborative showcases with like-minded brands. These strategic partnerships helped elevate the brand’s visibility, foster cross-industry connections, and present Peranakan jewellery in fresh, imaginative ways that resonate with today’s generation.
In recognition of his invaluable contributions to preserving Singapore’s rich cultural heritage, Mr. Thomis Kwan was honoured as one of the recipients of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Award 2024 by the National Heritage Board. This esteemed award also celebrates the commitment and craftsmanship of his dedicated team, whose collective skill and passion have been vital in the revival and preservation of traditional Peranakan jewellery. Together, their efforts ensure that this treasured cultural legacy continues to inspire and endure for future generations.
Today, Foundation Jewellers stands as one of the few remaining masters of Peranakan jewellery craftsmanship in Asia. With a legacy spanning over 50 years, the brand continues to create exceptional pieces that celebrate the rich heritage of Peranakan culture while embracing contemporary design.
